Hong Kong tourism pins hopes on mainland tourists’ return

HONG KONG — While some Hong Kong workers like taxi drivers are already feeling the approach of the good times associated with free-spending mainland tourists, red tape and a backlog of travel document applications is preventing many Chinese from making their way to the city.

Before COVID, more than 100,000 mainlanders would enter Hong Kong every day — a fact that is giving the city’s business community high hopes now that restrictions which had kept Chinese from traveling have been lifted.
